LOW BLOOD SUGAR (HYPOGLYCEMIA)
Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a condition that every cyclist can encounter on long bicycle tours and difficult stages as a result of insufficient nutrition. It manifests itself by directing the person to the chocolate and candy aisle of the first shop encountered at the end of a climb.
The problem is not experienced when the basic nutrition principles are observed. The principle is to eat before getting hungry. Special energy bars and gels are products developed for this purpose. In particular, eating something rich in complex carbohydrates 1-2 hours before a long ride prevents this problem.
Symptoms
- Fatigue, weakness
- Hunger, trembling
- Dizziness, headache
- Sweating
- Difficulty concentrating, confusion
- In severe cases: fainting
What to Do
Simple carbohydrates that quickly raise blood sugar are consumed: sugar, honey, fruit juice, candy, energy gel, banana. After the symptoms pass, complex carbohydrates are consumed to stabilize blood sugar. If symptoms persist, medical help should be sought.
