CADENCE
Cadence is the number of complete pedal revolutions made in one minute. It is expressed in rpm (revolutions per minute).
For example, if you complete 90 full pedal revolutions in one minute, your cadence is 90 rpm.
Cadence is one of the fundamental concepts of cycling. It is also one of the first technical terms new cyclists encounter. Statements such as "Higher cadence is always better"or"Professional cyclists always pedal at high cadence" are often exaggerated, yet cadence truly has a significant influence on riding comfort and efficiency.
Two cyclists can travel at the same speed while pedaling at different cadences. One may use a larger gear and pedal more slowly, while the other uses a smaller gear and pedals faster. Although both cyclists maintain the same speed, their muscles, joints, and energy systems work differently.
WHY IS CADENCE IMPORTANT?
Cadence directly influences cycling efficiency, muscle fatigue, joint loading, and overall performance.
At a lower cadence, each pedal stroke requires more force. At a higher cadence, the same power output is distributed over more pedal revolutions, reducing the force applied with each stroke.
An appropriate cadence can:

IS A HIGHER CADENCE ALWAYS BETTER?

Professional road cyclists often maintain a cadence between 80 and 100 rpm on flat terrain, although this varies during climbing or sprinting. Beginners naturally tend to pedal at lower cadences.
The goal is not to achieve the highest possible cadence but to develop a cadence that can be maintained comfortably and efficiently over time.
CADENCE AND ENERGY USE
As cadence increases, the force required for each pedal stroke decreases. However, the legs move faster and the cardiovascular system may work harder.
Conversely, riding at a very low cadence places greater mechanical stress on the muscles and joints.
The most economical cadence therefore varies from one cyclist to another. Age, fitness, training level, and riding conditions all influence this balance.
During long-distance rides, many cyclists find that a moderate to high cadence helps reduce muscular fatigue and improves overall comfort.
CADENCE AND KNEE HEALTH
Pedaling in a large gear at a very low cadence can increase the load placed on the knee joints.

However, cadence is only one factor affecting knee health. Saddle height, bike fit, pedaling technique, and bicycle setup are equally important.
HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR CADENCE?
Cadence is a skill that can be developed through practice.
To improve it:
Shift to an appropriate gear instead of pushing a gear that is too hard.
Focus on smooth and consistent pedaling.

"The higher the cadence, the better the ride."
This is not true.
