CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Carpal tunnel syndrome is the compression of the nerve going to the hand as it passes through the wrist. It manifests as numbness, tingling, and pain in the hands and fingers.

CAUSES

It is more common in those who do one type of hand work for a long time, such as computer operators, secretaries, bicycle users, and musicians.

The main reason related to cycling is that the grips are not at the correct angle. In the image above, the position of the wrist is seen on a handlebar where the grip angles are not correct. Since the wrist is bent outwards, it causes the nerve to be compressed.

Carpal tunnel is more common in female cyclists. If precautions are not taken and it becomes chronic, it may require surgery.

SOLUTION PROPOSALS

  1. Grip settings are adjusted so that the arm bones continue without making an angle at the wrist.
  2. Ergonomic grips are chosen to provide a wider contact surface.
