HAND NUMBNESS

Is Hand Numbness Normal While Cycling?

No.

A temporary feeling of pressure during long rides can occur, but persistent numbness, tingling, or loss of sensation should not be considered normal.

In many cases, these symptoms can be significantly reduced by improving bike fit, riding position, and hand support.

Possible Causes

Hand numbness can result from several different factors, including:

  • Too much body weight resting on the hands
  • Poor bike fit
  • Incorrect handlebar position or reach
  • Remaining in the same hand position for long periods
  • Thin handlebar tape or uncomfortable grips
  • Not wearing cycling gloves
  • Compression of the ulnar nerve (often called Handlebar Palsy)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome

What Can Help?

  • Review your riding position and overall bike fit.
  • Adjust handlebar height and reach.
  • Use ergonomic grips or thicker handlebar tape.
  • Wear well-padded cycling gloves if necessary.
  • Change your hand position frequently during longer rides.
  • Consider bar ends or handlebars that offer multiple hand positions.
  • If symptoms continue despite these changes, consult both a qualified bike-fitting specialist and a healthcare professional.

Important

Hand numbness is not an inevitable part of cycling.

With proper bike fit, suitable equipment, and good riding technique, most cyclists can ride comfortably for many years without experiencing persistent numbness.
