HYPOTHERMIA
Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing the core body temperature to drop dangerously below 35°C (95°F). It is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Cyclists are at risk when riding in cold, wet, or windy conditions, especially if wet clothing cannot be changed and the person stops generating body heat.
Symptoms
- Uncontrollable shivering (an early and important warning sign)
- Slurred speech
- Slow, shallow breathing
- Weak pulse
- Lack of coordination and stumbling
- Drowsiness or very low energy
- Confusion or difficulty thinking clearly
First Aid
- Call 112 for medical help.
- Move the person out of the cold to a warm, sheltered location.
- Remove wet clothing if possible and replace with dry, warm layers.
- Cover the person with blankets, including around the head.
- If they are conscious and able to swallow, provide warm beverages (not alcohol).
- Handle the person gently—rough movements can trigger cardiac arrest in severe hypothermia.
