HYPOTHERMIA

Hypothermia occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, causing the core body temperature to drop dangerously below 35°C (95°F). It is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition. Cyclists are at risk when riding in cold, wet, or windy conditions, especially if wet clothing cannot be changed and the person stops generating body heat.

Symptoms

  • Uncontrollable shivering (an early and important warning sign)
  • Slurred speech
  • Slow, shallow breathing
  • Weak pulse
  • Lack of coordination and stumbling
  • Drowsiness or very low energy
  • Confusion or difficulty thinking clearly

First Aid

  1. Call 112 for medical help.
  2. Move the person out of the cold to a warm, sheltered location.
  3. Remove wet clothing if possible and replace with dry, warm layers.
  4. Cover the person with blankets, including around the head.
  5. If they are conscious and able to swallow, provide warm beverages (not alcohol).
  6. Handle the person gently—rough movements can trigger cardiac arrest in severe hypothermia.
