CAVIT CAV (1905–1982)

Cavit Cav was one of the pioneers of Turkish cycling. He was among Turkey's first national cyclists, one of the country's first official cycling champions, one of the first Turkish cyclists to compete at the Olympic Games, and the founder of Turkey's first domestic bicycle manufacturing company. In addition to his achievements as an athlete, he made lasting contributions to Turkish cycling as a teacher, craftsman, inventor, and entrepreneur.

Early Life

Cavit Cav was born on 27 August 1905inThessaloniki (Selanik), then part of the Ottoman Empire. Following the Balkan Wars, his family migrated to Anatolia, settling first in İzmir, then Manisa, and finally Istanbul.

As a child, Cav earned money by working in local markets and, together with friends, purchased a bicycle. He soon began renting it out and repairing damaged parts himself, developing both his mechanical skills and his passion for cycling. These early experiences would later shape both his sporting career and his future as a bicycle manufacturer.

After enrolling at the Sultanahmet School of Artsin 1920, he became a teacher at theTophane Military School of Arts, while continuing to repair and rent bicycles in his spare time.

Sporting Career

In 1924, Cav unexpectedly entered the selection trials for the Paris Olympic Games after watching races in Istanbul. His performance earned him a place on the Turkish Olympic team.

Although he traveled to Paris, he was not allowed to compete because his bicycle did not meet the technical standards required by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The incident highlighted the gap between Turkish cycling equipment and international regulations at the time.

Later that same year, Cav became champion in both the sprint and endurance events at the first official IstanbulandTurkish National Cycling Championships. He remained one of Turkey's dominant cyclists until 1932 and also won the prestigious Istanbul–Konya road race.

In 1927, he represented Turkey in international competition for the first time.

At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games, Cav competed in the 1,000-meter time trial, finishing 16th. Together with his brother Galip Cav, he also represented Turkey in the 4,000-meter team pursuit, where the Turkish team finished ninth. These races marked Turkey's first official participation in Olympic track cycling.

CAV Bicycle Factory

After retiring from elite competition, Cav turned his attention to manufacturing.

In 1933, he established the CAV Bicycle Factoryin Ankara, producing some of Turkey's first domestically manufactured bicycles under theCAV brand.

The factory also produced children's bicycles, prams, wheelchairs, and various wheeled vehicles. Cav designed many of the machines and production tools himself and even developed innovative convertible tricycles.

Today, he is remembered not only as a successful cyclist but also as one of the founders of Turkey's bicycle industry.

Teaching and Contribution to Science

Throughout his life, Cav trained numerous mechanics and cyclists while continuing his career as a technical educator.

In a remarkable final act of generosity, he donated his body to the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine for anatomical education and scientific research, allowing future generations of medical students to benefit from his contribution even after his death.

Legacy

Cavit Cav's legacy extends far beyond competitive cycling.

He played a pioneering role in three major fields:

as one of Turkey's earliest cycling champions,
as one of the country's first Olympic cyclists,
and as one of the founders of Turkey's domestic bicycle manufacturing industry.

For these reasons, Cavit Cav is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of Turkish cycling.
