WINTER CYCLING CLOTHING
Cycling in winter requires suitable clothing to stay warm and dry without overheating. The key principle is layering: multiple thin layers are more effective than one thick layer.
Layering System
- Base layer (moisture-wicking layer): A thin, tight-fitting base layer that wicks sweat away from the skin. Synthetic fabrics or merino wool are ideal.
- Mid layer (insulating layer): A fleece or light insulating layer that traps warm air.
- Outer layer (windproof/waterproof shell): A windproof and/or waterproof jacket that protects against wind and rain while allowing moisture to escape.
Key Items for Winter Cycling
- Thermal tights/bib tights: Fleece-lined cycling tights for cold days.
- Thermal gloves: Windproof cycling gloves. For very cold conditions, a thin inner glove paired with a waterproof outer glove.
- Thermal shoe covers (overshoes): Keep feet warm and dry.
- Thermal hat or skull cap: A thin hat that fits under the helmet. Keeps the head warm and ear warmers protect the ears.
- Buff / neck gaiter: Protects the neck and can be pulled up over the face.
- Cycling glasses: Protect the eyes from wind, cold, and rain.
