VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for bone health. It helps the body absorb calcium. The body can produce Vitamin D when the skin is exposed to sunlight (specifically UVB radiation). It is also found in small amounts in some foods (fatty fish, egg yolks) and is available as a supplement.
Vitamin D and Cycling
Outdoors cyclists generally get good sun exposure and therefore tend to have adequate Vitamin D levels during the summer months. However, during winter or periods of heavy indoor training, Vitamin D deficiency can become a concern.
Vitamin D deficiency can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, bone pain, and increased risk of stress fractures—all detrimental to a cyclist's performance and health. Athletes training heavily are particularly vulnerable to deficiency.
Symptoms of Deficiency
- Fatigue and tiredness
- Bone pain and muscle weakness
- Frequent illness (weakened immune system)
- Mood changes and depression
Recommendation
During winter months or periods of predominantly indoor training, Vitamin D supplementation is often recommended. Consult a doctor to check your Vitamin D levels (via blood test) and advise on appropriate supplementation.
