V-BRAKE CARTRIDGE REPLACEMENT

V-brake brake pads (shoes) can be of the cartridge type, where only the rubber insert is replaceable without changing the entire shoe holder. This is more economical and is the standard on most quality V-brake systems.

When to Replace

When the wear indicator groove on the brake pad has disappeared, or when the braking performance has noticeably decreased, the cartridge should be replaced.

Replacement Steps

  1. Loosen the brake by pulling the noodle (the curved metal pipe) out of the brake lever.
  2. Look at the side of the brake shoe holder for a small retaining pin or locking screw. Remove or loosen it.
  3. Slide the old cartridge out of the open end of the shoe holder.
  4. Slide the new cartridge in, ensuring the closed end faces the direction of wheel rotation (usually marked with an arrow on the cartridge).
  5. Reinsert the retaining pin or tighten the locking screw.
  6. Reconnect the brake noodle and check brake adjustment.
