TRACK RACING: OMNIUM

The Omnium is a track cycling event consisting of multiple disciplines that is designed to identify the most versatile track cyclist. A single rider (not a team) competes across all events, and points are accumulated across the events. The rider with the most total points wins.

Current Olympic Omnium Format

The current Olympic format consists of four events, all completed in a single day:

  1. Scratch Race
  2. Tempo Race: A mass-start endurance race where a point is awarded to the leader of each lap. The rider with the most points accumulated wins.
  3. Elimination Race: A race where the last rider across the finish line every two laps is eliminated, until only two riders remain and sprint for the win.
  4. Points Race

Points are awarded based on finishing position in each event, and the rider with the highest total after all four events wins the gold medal.
