TRACK RACING: MADISON

The Madison is a team endurance event on the track for teams of two riders. Only one rider from each team is officially racing at any one time; the other circles slowly waiting. The active rider passes momentum to their partner via a hand-sling (grabbing their partner's hand and throwing them forward into the race).

Points are awarded at intermediate sprints every 10 laps. The event requires excellent teamwork and communication. It was named after Madison Square Garden in New York, where a similar event was popular in the early 20th century.
