THRU-AXLE (AXLE, THRU AXLE)

A thru-axle is a type of wheel attachment system where a bolt-like axle threads completely through the fork or rear dropouts and into a threaded receiver on the other side. It replaces the older quick release, or the even older simple axle and nut system, while performing the same function.

A thru-axle is larger in diameter than a quick release's 5mm rod—9mm, 12mm, or 15mm diameter. This feature locks the wheel more rigidly to the fork, preventing flex.

The rigid wheel attachment of the thru-axle brings several advantages. While quick release wheels can lose some tightness due to braking, the thru-axle is stable. Problems such as rotor rub after hard corners and braking are also not encountered in systems using thru-axles.

Another advantage of the thru-axle in disc brake systems: when wheels are removed and reinstalled, the rotor can be easily re-centered in the caliper.
