TANDEM BICYCLE

A tandem bicycle is a bicycle designed for two riders to pedal simultaneously. The rider at the front is called the pilot or captain, and the rider at the back is called the stoker. Both riders pedal, though usually only the pilot steers.

Because two riders are pedaling, a tandem can often go faster than a single bicycle, especially on flat terrain and downhills. Tandems are very popular in para-cycling, where a sighted pilot guides a visually impaired stoker. Tandem cycling is also enjoyed by couples and families as a social activity.
