STEM

The stem is the component that connects the handlebars to the fork steerer tube, effectively linking the handlebars to the rest of the bicycle. The stem's length and angle are key factors in determining the rider's position on the bicycle.

Stem Specifications

  • Length: Measured from the center of the steerer tube to the center of the handlebar clamp. Typically ranges from 60mm to 130mm. A longer stem stretches the rider out more, while a shorter stem brings them upright.
  • Angle (Rise): The angle of the stem. A positive angle (e.g., +17°) raises the handlebars; a negative angle lowers them.
  • Clamp diameter: Must match the handlebar diameter (most common are 31.8mm and 35mm for modern bikes).

Adjusting the Riding Position

Changing the stem is one of the most effective and affordable ways to adjust bicycle fit. A shorter or higher-rise stem raises the handlebar height, creating a more upright and comfortable position. A longer or lower-rise stem creates a more aerodynamic, aggressive position.
