SNOW BLINDNESS

Snow blindness (photokeratitis) is a condition that causes symptoms such as stinging, burning, pain, and light sensitivity in the eyes. It is simply defined as a sunburn caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays of bright, intense sunlight on the cornea of the eye.

It is commonly encountered in those interested in skiing, mountaineering, and similar winter sports, as well as those exposed to solariums, cameras, or welding machine lights. Prolonged bicycle use in snow-covered areas can also cause snow blindness.

To protect yourself, it is sufficient to use UV-protected sunglasseseven whileriding in the snow.

Snow blindness is generally a temporary condition. It can cause permanent vision damage, though rarely. For bothersome symptoms of snow blindness, an ophthalmologist must be consulted.
