SADDLE

The saddle (seat) is the component that the rider sits on. Saddle comfort is one of the most common concerns among cyclists, and an incorrectly chosen or adjusted saddle is the primary cause of saddle sores, numbness, and discomfort on the bike.

Saddle Selection

The most important criterion in saddle selection is width. The saddle must be wide enough to support the sit bones (ischial tuberosities). A saddle that is too narrow forces the rider's weight onto soft tissue rather than bone. Sit bone width can be measured using a special measuring device at most bike shops.

Saddle Shape

Saddles come in many shapes: flat or curved profiles, with or without a center cutout (which relieves pressure on soft tissue), and varying lengths. The best saddle shape depends on the rider's anatomy and riding position.

Saddle Adjustment

Key adjustments are: height (most critical), fore-aft position, and tilt (angle). Most saddles should be set level (parallel to the ground) or with a very slight nose-down tilt for comfort.
