PEDAL
Pedals are the components that transfer the power from the rider's feet to the crankset and ultimately to the rear wheel. They are a fundamental interface between the rider and the bicycle.
Types of Pedals
Flat Pedals (Platform Pedals)
Flat pedals provide a wide platform on which any shoe can be placed. They are especially preferred for mountain biking, city cycling, and casual use. They have pins on the platform surface to prevent the foot from slipping.
Clipless Pedals (SPD)
Clipless pedals allow the cycling shoe to be mechanically attached to the pedal via a cleat on the sole of the shoe. This provides a more efficient power transfer. Used widely in road racing and mountain biking. The rider can release their foot with a lateral twist of the ankle.
Toe Clip Pedals
An older generation system with a cage and strap that holds the foot to the pedal. Largely replaced by modern clipless systems.
Installation
Pedals have opposite threading on each side. The right pedal has right-hand (standard) threading. The left pedal has left-hand (reverse) threading. This prevents pedals from loosening during use.
