KEEPING FIT
Keeping fit through the off-season or during periods when outdoor cycling is not possible is crucial for a cyclist who wants to maintain performance or return to form quickly in the spring.
Indoor Cycling
The most effective way to maintain cycling fitness is to continue riding indoors using a rollerortrainer. Smart trainers with virtual training platforms (like Zwift, Rouvy) can make indoor training much more engaging and structured.
Cross-Training
Other sports can help maintain overall fitness while giving the cycling-specific muscles a break:
- Running: Excellent cardiovascular training. Start gradually if you are not used to running to avoid injury.
- Swimming: Very low impact and great for cardiovascular and overall body fitness.
- Strength training: Building core and leg strength in the gym during the off-season can improve cycling performance.
- Yoga / Pilates: Improves flexibility and core strength, both important for cycling comfort and injury prevention.
Importance of Rest
The off-season is also an important time to let your body recover fully from the demands of the riding season. A period of reduced activity is beneficial.
