INSECT STINGS

First aid and treatment for insect, snake, and marine creature bites and stings encountered during bicycle tours.

Bee Sting

  1. The stinger is removed if visible.
  2. Cold is applied (ice, cold water). Ammonia is not used.
  3. Medical help is provided against airway blockages for stings in the mouth and neck.
  4. Medical help is provided for those with an allergy history.

Wasp, Hornet, Bumblebee Sting

  1. Cold is applied.
  2. Ammonia is applied.
  3. Medical help is provided for those with an allergy history.

Centipede Bite

  1. The bite area is washed with water.
  2. Cold is applied.
  3. Ammonia is applied.
  4. Medical help is provided for those with an allergy history.

Tick Bite

  1. The tick is removed with tweezers from the part closest to the skin, without crushing it.
  2. The wound is cleaned with antiseptic.
  3. The tick should not be burned or crushed, as the tick body contains harmful secretions that can spread into the wound.
  4. Medical help should be sought, as ticks can transmit serious diseases such as Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever and Lyme disease.

Jellyfish Sting

  1. The stinging area is cleaned with sea water (not fresh water).
  2. Visible tentacles are removed with tweezers or a card—not by hand.
  3. Cold is applied.
  4. Medical help is provided for those with an allergy history.

Scorpion Sting

  1. Medical help (112) is called immediately.
  2. The sting area is kept below heart level.
  3. Cold is applied.
  4. A tourniquet is not applied and the wound is not cut.
