FRONT DERAILLEUR
The front derailleur shifts the chain between the chainrings on the crankset. It consists of a cage that moves the chain laterally, guided by a cable operated by the left-hand shifter on the handlebars.
As the 1x (single chainring) drivetrain has become the dominant standard on modern mountain, gravel, and road bikes, the front derailleur is becoming much less common on new bicycles. However, it is still widely used on 2x road bikes and older 3x touring setups.
