FRAME

The bicycle frame is the central structure of the bicycle to which all other components are attached. It defines the bicycle's geometry, ride quality, and is a key determinant of the bicycle's weight, stiffness, and handling characteristics.

Frame Materials

  • Steel: The traditional material. Strong, durable, comfortable (absorbs vibration), and repairable. Heavier than other materials. High-quality steel (like chromoly/4130 steel) is used on touring and handbuilt frames.
  • Aluminum: The most common material on modern mid-range bicycles. Lightweight and stiff, but transmits road vibration more than steel. Not easily repairable if cracked.
  • Carbon fiber: Lightweight, very stiff, and can be molded into aerodynamic shapes. The material of choice for high-performance road and mountain bikes. Most expensive. Cannot be repaired if the structural integrity is compromised.
  • Titanium: Combines the light weight of aluminum with the durability and vibration-damping of steel. Very expensive but extremely long-lasting.
