FOOD ENERGY VALUES

Cycling requires energy, and that energy comes from the food we eat. Every food contains a different amount of calories, and the rate at which those calories are burned depends on factors such as riding speed, terrain, wind conditions, and the rider's body weight.

The Bicycle Calorie Table below presents the approximate energy values of some commonly consumed foods and shows how long an average cyclist would need to ride at a moderate pace to expend that amount of energy.

The values in this table are approximate and are intended to help compare the energy content of different foods in a practical and easy-to-understand way.


How to Read the Table

The table consists of four columns:

Food
Lists the name of the food. Unless otherwise stated, all values are based on 100 grams. Foods marked as "1 piece" or "1 tablespoon" refer to the specified serving size.

Energy (kcal)
Shows the approximate amount of energy provided by the food.

Cycling Time
Indicates approximately how many minutes an average cyclist would need to ride at a moderate pace to burn that amount of energy.

Distance (km)
Shows the approximate cycling distance that corresponds to the same energy expenditure.


Why Does Energy Expenditure Vary?

No two cyclists burn calories at exactly the same rate. Energy consumption depends on many factors, including:

  • Rider's body weight
  • Cycling speed
  • Road gradient
  • Wind conditions
  • Bicycle weight
  • Tire pressure
  • Carried load
  • Fitness level

For this reason, the cycling time and distance shown in the table should be considered approximate estimates rather than exact values.


Why Is This Important for Cyclists?

Proper energy management plays a key role in cycling performance, especially during long rides.

Insufficient energy intake may lead to:

  • Early fatigue
  • Reduced performance
  • Decreased concentration
  • Glycogen depletion ("bonking")
