DOWN TUBE
The down tube is the large, diagonal tube that connects the head tube at the front of the bicycle to the bottom bracket shell at the base. It is typically the largest and strongest tube in the bicycle frame, as it absorbs a significant amount of the rider's pedaling forces and road vibration.
On many touring bicycles, the down tube features mounts (brazed-on bosses) for two water bottle cages. Some older bicycles had friction shifter mounts on the down tube as well.
