DOGS

One of the most common situations cyclists encounter on the road is meeting dogs. Most dogs do not intend to harm cyclists; they simply react instinctively to a moving object by running after it or barking. For this reason, panicking and trying to escape at high speed is usually not the best solution.

What Should You Do?

  • Stay calm.
  • Avoid sudden movements.
  • Slow down if possible.
  • If necessary, come to a complete stop.

In many cases, once the bicycle stops, the dog's interest also fades. Trying to outrun a dog may instead trigger its chasing instinct.

If You Need to Get Off the Bicycle

Sometimes dismounting is the safest option. If you do:

  • Keep the bicycle between yourself and the dog.
  • Do not turn your back on the dog.
  • Do not run away.
  • Move away slowly and calmly when it is safe to do so.

The bicycle can serve as a useful physical barrier and provide additional protection.

Packs of Dogs

In rural areas, cyclists may encounter groups of dogs or livestock guardian dogs.

In these situations:

  • Avoid approaching the pack.
  • Do not enter areas they are protecting, such as farms, yards, or livestock enclosures.
  • If necessary, stop and wait for the dogs to calm down.
  • Follow the instructions of the owner or shepherd if one is present.

Group Rides

During group rides, it is important to keep the group together. Dogs often focus their attention on the last rider in the line.

Therefore:

  • Avoid leaving large gaps within the group.
  • Having experienced riders at both the front and the rear can improve safety.
  • Try not to let anyone fall behind alone.

Persistent Dogs

Some dogs may continue following a bicycle despite slowing down or stopping. In many rural areas, dogs have learned to avoid people who appear to pick up a stone. Simply bending down as if picking up a stone or pretending to throw one may cause some dogs to back away. However, this method is not always effective, and actually throwing stones at animals is neither recommended nor appropriate.

Ultrasonic Dog Repellers (Dazers)

Electronic ultrasonic dog repellers, commonly known as dazers, are sometimes used by cyclists. Their effectiveness varies depending on the individual dog, the distance, and environmental conditions. They should not be considered a guaranteed solution. Anyone considering purchasing one should carefully review independent tests and user experiences.

FIRST AID FOR DOG BITES

  • Ensure the scene is safe before assisting.
  • Check consciousness, airway, breathing, and circulation.
  • Wash the bite wound thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 5 minutes.
  • If there is bleeding, apply direct pressure with a clean cloth or sterile gauze.
  • Cover the wound with a clean dressing.
  • Seek medical attention immediately or call the local emergency medical service.

Important: Even minor dog bites require medical evaluation because of the risk of rabies and tetanus. Do not ignore a small wound.

Ask a Question

Tip of the Day.
