DERAILLEUR HANGER
The derailleur hanger is a small tab of metal (usually aluminum) that connects the rear derailleur to the bicycle frame. It is a deliberate "weak link" designed to break or bend in a crash before the more expensive and structurally critical frame is damaged.
Derailleur hangers are bicycle-specific and virtually every bicycle model has its own unique hanger shape. It is highly recommended to carry one or two spare derailleur hangers on any long tour, as a bent or broken hanger can prevent the bicycle from being rideable.
