CROSS-CHAINING

Cross-chaining occurs when the chain is on the largest chainring and the largest cog (big-big), or the smallest chainring and the smallest cog (small-small). This creates a sharp angle for the chain, increasing friction, noise, and wear on the drivetrain components.

Cyclists are advised to avoid cross-chaining to prolong the life of the chainandcassette, and to ensure smoother shifting.
