CRANKSET

The crankset (also called chainset) is the component that converts the reciprocating motion of the legs into the rotational motion that drives the chain. It consists of two crank arms (the arms that the pedals attach to) and one, two, or three chainrings.

Crank Length

Cranks come in different lengths (typically ranging from 165mm to 175mm for adults). The correct length relates to leg length and riding style, though the impact on performance is debated. Most cyclists use cranks in the 170-172.5mm range.

Chainrings

The chainrings are the toothed circles attached to the crankset that the chain wraps around. The number of teeth on the chainring, combined with the number of teeth on the rear cog, determines the gear ratio. Common configurations include 1x (single chainring), 2x (double chainring), and 3x (triple chainring, mostly found on older or touring bikes).
