COASTER BRAKE (BACK-PEDAL BRAKE)

A coaster brake (also called a back-pedal brake or contra brake) is a braking system built into the rear hub of a bicycle. Braking is activated by pedaling backwards. The rider pushes the pedals in reverse, and this engages the brake mechanism inside the hub.

Coaster brakes are most common on children's bicycles and simple single-speed city bikes. They are very simple, require virtually no maintenance, and are weather-proof. Their disadvantages include the inability to simultaneously hold the bicycle still on a slope while adjusting foot position, and slightly heavier rear wheel weight.
