CLIMBING A HILL

Hills can feel intimidating for many beginner cyclists. Breathing gets heavier, legs start burning, and speed drops quickly. But with proper gear use and a bit of experience, climbs stop being a struggle and become a rhythm instead.

When the pedals spin comfortably in the right gear, your knees stay protected and the climb becomes smoother and more enjoyable. After a while, hills can even turn into an opportunity to slow down, enjoy the scenery, and catch your breath.

USING GEARS WHILE CLIMBING

The most important thing during a climb is to keep the pedals turning smoothly rather than forcing them. Grinding a heavy gear:

  • puts extra stress on the knees,
  • strains the drivetrain,
  • breaks your rhythm,
  • and causes fatigue much faster.

The goal is not speed, but maintaining a comfortable cadence.

Prepare before the hill starts

One of the most common mistakes beginners make is waiting until the steepest part of the climb to shift gears.

The correct approach is to shift into an easier gear before the slope becomes too steep. Once cadence drops too much, hard gear changes may:

  • cause chain drops,
  • strain mechanical parts,
  • or affect balance and control.

👉 Try to choose the right gear before the climb becomes difficult.

Protect your cadence

While climbing, consistency matters more than speed.

If pedaling feels too heavy, shift to an easier gear.

If the pedals spin too freely, shift slightly harder.

A good cadence allows you to keep breathing under control while continuing to pedal comfortably.

When cadence drops too much:

  • legs fatigue quickly,
  • pressure on the knees increases,
  • and climbing becomes mentally harder as well.

What if you shifted too late?

If the climb suddenly becomes steep and your cadence drops too much, avoid forcing the pedals in a heavy gear.

Instead, if safe:

  • use a wider line to reduce the effective gradient,
  • make gentle zigzags on the road,
  • or stop briefly and restart in an easier gear.

This is far healthier and more efficient than pushing too hard.

When even the easiest gear is not enough

Some climbs are simply very steep.

If pedaling becomes impossible even in the easiest gear, the smartest option may be to get off and walk for a while.

That is not failure. Even experienced cyclists sometimes walk steep sections. What matters is protecting your knees and keeping the ride enjoyable.

And most of the time, a great descent is waiting at the top 🚲
