CLIMBING A HILL
Hill climbing is one of the most challenging and rewarding aspects of cycling. Efficient climbing technique can significantly reduce the effort required and help you enjoy the ascent more.
Gear Selection
Before the climb begins, shift to an easy gear in advance. Trying to shift under heavy load on the steepest part of the climb can damage the drivetrain or cause the chain to drop. The right gear is one that allows you to maintain a comfortable cadence (ideally 70-90 RPM).
Body Position
On easier climbs, staying seated and riding in a relaxed position is more efficient. On steeper climbs, standing up on the pedals provides more power but uses more energy. A good technique is to alternate between seated and standing to give different muscle groups a rest.
Breathing
Breathing rhythmically and deeply is very important on climbs. Do not hold your breath. Breathe in time with your pedal strokes.
Pacing
Start the climb at a pace you can sustain. Starting too fast and dying on the climb is a common mistake. On long climbs, a steady, sustainable effort is much more effective than a fast start.
