CARRYING THE BICYCLE

There are times when you need to pick up and carry your bicycle: going up stairs, crossing obstacles on tour, passing through a muddy road. Knowing the right technique for carrying a bicycle makes this easier.

Shoulder Carry

The most common method for carrying a bicycle for a short distance. The bicycle is tilted, the right arm is passed through the triangle between the frame, and the bicycle is rested on the right shoulder. The right hand holds the right handlebar. This method is also used to cross obstacles in cyclocross races.

Wheel Carry

For longer distances, the bicycle is carried upside down by selecting a less dirty spot. Carrying on the head distributes the weight more evenly for long distances.

Tips

  • Before picking up the bicycle, make sure the chain is in the smallest chainring and smallest cog to avoid chain marks on clothing.
  • Carry the bicycle from the bottom bracket for better balance.
