CARBON FOOTPRINT

A carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (primarily carbon dioxide, CO₂) produced directly and indirectly by an individual, organization, event, or product. It is typically expressed in equivalent tonnes of CO₂.

Transportation and Carbon Footprint

Transportation is one of the largest contributors to an individual's carbon footprint. A private car running on gasoline or diesel emits CO₂ directly from the exhaust pipe, contributing to climate change. Public transport generally has a lower carbon footprint per passenger kilometer than a private car.

The bicycle produces zero direct emissions during use. From a lifecycle perspective (including manufacturing), it still has an extremely low carbon footprint compared to any motorized vehicle. Studies consistently show that cycling is one of the most effective personal choices for reducing carbon emissions from transport.

Bicycle vs. Car

Replacing a car trip with a cycling trip completely eliminates the fuel-related CO₂ emissions of that journey. For urban commuters who can cycle to work, this can amount to several hundred kilograms to over a tonne of CO₂ saved per year.
