CAMPSITE SELECTION
Selecting a safe and comfortable campsite is one of the most important skills for a bicycle tourer. Whether using official campsites or wild camping, these criteria should be considered.
Criteria for a Good Campsite
- Flat and dry ground: A sloping or wet area makes for a very uncomfortable night.
- Protection from wind: Natural windbreaks like trees, rocks, and hills provide shelter. However, do not camp directly under a tree during a storm.
- Distance from water: Camping near a water source is convenient, but keep a distance of at least 60 meters from streams or lakes to protect the water source and avoid flooding in case of rain.
- Safety: Select a campsite that is not too visible from the road and where you feel safe.
- Legal permission: In many countries, wild camping requires the landowner's permission. Respect local rules.
