BRAKE PAD REPLACEMENT (HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKE)

Brake pads on hydraulic disc brakes wear out over time and must be replaced. Worn brake pads reduce braking performance and can permanently damage the rotor.

When to Replace

When the brake pad material has worn down to a thickness of 0.5-1 mm, or when a metallic scraping sound is heard during braking, the pads must be replaced.

Replacement Steps

  1. Remove the wheel from the bicycle.
  2. Remove the retaining pin or clip that holds the brake pads in the caliper.
  3. Slide the old brake pads out of the caliper.
  4. Before installing the new pads, push the caliper pistons back gently using a tire lever or a dedicated tool. Be careful with hydraulic systems—do not squeeze the brake lever while the wheel is out.
  5. Insert the new brake pads and secure with the retaining pin or clip.
  6. Reinstall the wheel. Check that the rotor sits properly between the pads.
  7. Squeeze the brake lever several times to seat the pads against the rotor.
  8. Bed in the new pads: find a safe open area and perform 10-15 moderate stops from medium speed to properly wear the pads in.

Important Notes

  • Do not contaminate the brake pads or rotor with oil or grease.
  • Only use pads compatible with your specific brake model.
