BICYCLE ON THE BUS
In Turkey, long-distance bus companies generally do not allow bicycles on board. However, folded bicycles may be carried on some lines. Policies vary by company, so it is best to check with the specific bus company before travel.
How to Transport a Bicycle by Bus
If permitted, bicycles are usually placed in the luggage compartment under the bus. To protect it during transport:
- Wrap the frame with cardboard or foam padding.
- Remove the pedals and handlebars if necessary to reduce overall size.
- Let the air out of the tires slightly to prevent blowouts from pressure changes.
- Secure the bicycle with straps so it does not move around.
Bicycle-Friendly Bus Lines
Some tour and regional bus operators in Europe offer dedicated bicycle transport services, with secure spaces in a specially designed luggage car. This is particularly common for cycle tourism routes.
Alternative: Cargo Transport
An alternative to carrying the bicycle yourself is to ship it via cargo. This is a common method for long-distance tours. The bicycle should be packed in a bicycle box (available at bicycle shops) before shipping.
