BICYCLE CARRIER
A bicycle carrier is a rack system that attaches to a car, allowing one or more bicycles to be transported. There are three main types: roof carriers, rear/towbar carriers, and trunk-mounted carriers.
Roof Carrier
A roof carrier is mounted on the vehicle's roof bars. The bicycle is mounted upright or on its side. The main advantage is that the rear of the car remains accessible. The disadvantages include requiring physical effort to lift the bicycle to roof height and increasing fuel consumption due to increased aerodynamic drag. Also, care must be taken when entering low-clearance car parks.
Towbar Carrier
A towbar carrier is the most popular and practical bicycle carrier type. It mounts to the vehicle's tow hitch. It can carry 2-4 bicycles depending on the model. It is easy to load and unload. The main disadvantage is that it may block the rear license plate and lights (a light board is required).
Trunk-Mounted Carrier
A trunk-mounted carrier mounts to the trunk lid of the car using straps. It is more affordable. The main disadvantages are that it may scratch the car paintwork and is less stable than the other types.
Things to Consider
- Always secure the bicycle firmly before departure.
- Check that the bicycle does not obstruct the rear lights or license plate.
- Respect the maximum load capacity of the carrier.
- Use a bicycle lock to secure bicycles to the carrier when parking.
