ADJUSTMENTS
Correctly performing bicycle adjustments is the first condition for riding comfort and performance.
Bicycle adjustments fall into two categories.
- The first is adjustments to be made to a newly purchased bicycle. With these adjustments, the bicycle is personalized and made ready for use.
- The second category of adjustments are operations that are repeated at regular intervals and corrections of deteriorations caused by use.
1. NEW BICYCLE ADJUSTMENTS
- Frame size is the foundation of all bicycle adjustments. However, frame size is not a quantity that can be adjusted. When buying a bicycle, a frame of the correct size appropriate for the person's height is selected. Even so, frames that are one size too small or large can be personalized with saddle and handlebar adjustments.
- Saddle adjustmentsare the first adjustment of a newly purchased bicycle. Saddle height (theheight adjustment) is made so that the knee joint of the leg pressing on the lower pedal is fully extended when sitting on the saddle.
- Handlebar adjustmentsare the most effective step in personalizing the bicycle. The first thing to know is that handlebar height is not adjustable. In the absence of another solution, special parts that raise thestemcan be somewhat helpful. The width of the handlebars should match the rider's shoulder width. Flat handlebars used on mountain bikes are personalized by cutting from each end.Grip adjustments are the adjustment that best serves the bicycle fitting the person. Grips not at the correct angle can cause great discomfort and important health problems—carpal tunnel syndrome.
2. REGULAR ADJUSTMENTS
Apart from deteriorations that occur due to use, all adjustments of the bicycle are renewed during periodic maintenance.
- Gear adjustments are made during six-monthly or annual maintenance, apart from deteriorations caused by use.
- Brake adjustments vary depending on the brake type. Mechanical brake adjustments deteriorate more frequently than hydraulic brakes. They are made during six-monthly or annual maintenance, apart from use-related deteriorations.
- Wheel (rim) adjustment is performed in annual maintenance, apart from use-related deteriorations such as broken spokes.
- Tire pressure check is performed at every use, during daily maintenance.
